Project Shift: Collaborative Change and Development
Within Intelligent Shift we align our employees by Practice Areas (PAs). This alignment lets us evolve from a collection of individual contributors to an organization of highly skilled practice areas designed to empower employees and business development. Each PA provides beneficial tools to strengthen its members such as mentorship and development opportunities. Read more about the creation of our PAs here.
The Practice Areas were created to foster functional alignment across multiple clients and contracts which is extremely valuable for both the employees and the company. However, any Agile person will tell you that a critical aspect of organizational success is being cross functional. Cross functional teams lead to greater innovation and higher chances of success. We learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives, and we become more well-rounded individuals and teams.
“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself”
Once the PAs were established individually, the leads began to discuss their experiences leading our members. They, somewhat organically, started to break down the silos that a construct like PAs could have created. They learned from each other's successes and failures and took each other’s good ideas and proliferated them across the entire company.
The leads looked across to the other PAs to see how one could recreate their successes and identify ways to collaborate:
The Data Science lead facilitated a pilot across the PAs to identify the best knowledge management solution and practices to keep their members informed and foster collaboration.
From Enterprise Management the leads took their excellent weekly engagement strategy.
Agile Engineering was asked to provide a mini tutorial on Meeting Facilitation for Enterprise Management’s All-Hands.
The leads recognized a key overlap in Agile Engineering and Technology Delivery, and then started a cross PA effort to further our depth in DevSecOps and CI/CD.
Systems Engineering & Integration created and shared a video introducing their PA and it ignited a creative spark, pushing all leads towards more inventive ways of communicating with their members.
“The nice thing about teamwork is that you always have others on your side”
The leads have created opportunities for cross-collaboration amongst our five PAs by recognizing the great things each is doing to support their members and then adopting in their individual area. The wealth of knowledge contained within each PA is phenomenal, so we know that this is just the beginning. We’re excited to watch it unfold.
